Terming the state government notifications made for the land acquisition for the proposed university as illegal, a division bench comprising Chief Justice V Gopalgowda and Justice B P Das directed the company on Tuesday to return the awarded land to the original owners.

"We vehemently oppose the move of the Naveen Patnaik-led government to hand over thousands of acres of land belonging to Lord Jagannath and the VHP," he said.
Earlier, two different benches of the apex court had refused to hear the cross-appeals saying that one or the other judges had been linked to the adjudication of the issue before.
